CHAPTER 28

LAUREL AND LIBBY

“Is this the right way?” Audrina asked Emmy while they were in her car that day, going to Laurel’s house so Emmy could talk to her.

“Yeah, I believe it’s this.” Emmy answered. “Cherry Street is right there so—”

“What do you think of that Libby girl living in Mountain Valley now?”

“I don’t know, Au,” Emmy answered. “I mean, maybe she has her reasons. Maybe, it’s too painful to be here, but then again, that’s an obvious sign of flight. But...in cases like this, it’s just so hard to make a conclusion.”

“Especially because your dear client is a ghost.”

“Au,”

“Hello? I’m here.” Lucy said from behind them. “And look, we’re here. This is Laurel’s house.” She said and thought that not much has changed about Laurel’s house. It was still the same house that she remembered from when they were kids—white, with a white picket fence, and flowers in front. In short, it was a pristine house; a house that will make you think that the person living there is clean and pure and couldn’t think about bad things about others.

“This is her house?” Emmy asked.

“Yeah,” Lucy answered.

“Come on.”

They then made their way out of the car and Emmy took the responsibility of ringing the doorbell. For a couple of seconds, no one came out of the house.

“Maybe she isn’t here.” Audrina answered.

“She is! I could feel her!” Lucy said a little too loudly.

“Okay, okay,” Audrina said, “I can hear you, you know?”

Emmy rolled her eyes, rang the doorbell again, and then waited for Laurel. And then after a few seconds, someone opened the door. Emmy thought that this woman was beautiful: She had layered brown hair, and was wearing square-rimmed eyeglasses that made her look kind, gentle, and smart. She definitely looked like she did on her blog.

“Yes?” Laurel said. “Can I help you?”

“Uhm, Hi. Laurel Wood, right?” Emmy asked.

“Yes, that’s me.” Laurel smiled. “How may I help you?”

“Hi,” Emmy said and shook Laurel’s hand. “I’ve been reading your blog and I thought I could see you for an interview. I know it’s on short notice but…I hope you don’t mind.”

“Uhm, yeah,” Laurel said, with a hint of hesitation in her voice. She then looked at Emmy and Audrina and smiled. “Yeah, sure, come in.”

She led them to the den and told them to wait for her there.

“She has a big house…” Audrina quipped, as she looked at the number of antiques in the den. There were a number of pictures lining the walls, too - pictures of Laurel as a kid, of her during her High School Graduation, of her family, and of an adult Laurel. Emmy thought that she had a lot of pain in her eyes.

“Yeah, they’re very rich.” Lucy said.

“She really couldn’t see you?”

“If she could, she probably wouldn’t have let you in.”

Emmy and Audrina sat down on the couch just as Laurel came back in the den. “I’ve some fresh watermelon juice and green tea cookies. Would you be okay with this?”

“Oh, it’s more than enough.
